The possibilities of large-scale data collection and the intelligent analysis of such data (A.I., artificial intelligence) are very interesting from a forensic perspective. The CLHC recognizes these developments in the theme Digital Forensics, Forensic Big Data Analysis and Cybercrime (4) in which the Informatics Institute of the UvA closely cooperates with the NFI among others through the special chair of NFI expert Prof. dr. Zeno Geradts, senior forensic scientist at the Netherlands Forensic Institute at the Forensic Digital Biometrics Traces department.
The UvA is currently heavily investing in academic research and education in the field of intelligent data analysis. In collaboration with the Dutch police and the NFI, the aim is to realize an active forensic program within the newly established ICAI (Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence) looking into the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in forensic evidence. For example, the development of computer models which can detect deepfakes and the conducting of research into the use of AI for the detection of hidden messages (steganography). Or the use of AI in voice recognition or the reading of data from cars. As time goes on, the collaboration will be further expanded into an independent forensic research lab within the ICAI.
The scientific work mainly focuses on the evidential value in digital forensics, related to the uncertain relationship between the digital traces found and (the actions of) a suspect also given the anti-forensic software that is increasingly available. Recent and current projects involve:
